Yellow Springs Alumni XC Report

09/07/2010

*Yellow Springs has an amazing 7 athletes competing at the collegiate level in cross county this fall. I doubt that are any other high schools our size in the state have had this level of success. Here is a report on our stars and their first competitions of the year at the collegiate level:*

* *

*Evan Firestone*, a junior on Wright State University’s Cross Country team, was a rowdy raider at this past Saturday’s University of Dayton 5k Challenge cross country meet in Kettering. Firestone ran a lifetime best of 15:38 for the 5,000 meter race to lead Wright State to a 4^th place team finish while placing 16^th overall out of the 139 collegiate runners in the men’s race. Firestone, a 2007 graduate from Yellow Springs HS, was 12^th at the Ohio HS Cross Country championships his senior year and one of the famous “Trifecta” who dominated cross country.

The leader of the Trifecta in HS, 2007 Yellow Springs grad* Sam Borchers* started off his 3rd year of cross country with the strong Penn State team at a dual meet with Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania. Competing over a 6,000 meter course Sam finished 19th out of 41 runners in 19:14 (approximately 16:02 at 5k). The Nittany Lion men took the victory, winning 23-35. Low score wins in XC.

2008 YS HS graduate* Andy Peters*, the third member of the Trifecta is now a junior at St. Xavier in Chicago. Peters opened his season by finishing 24^th in the competition held at the University of Illinois-Chicago (which is in the same conference as Wright State) on Saturday. Peters ran his 4 mile race in 22:04 as St. Xavier University placed 3^rd out of the five (5) colleges in the meet.

Goshen college (Indiana) sophomore twins* Jacob and Brock Gunderkline* opened up their XC seasons in the college's traditionally unique way with its annual Hokum Karem. A Hokum Karem – where teammates pair up and alternately run one-mile increments of the course at a time – saw the team of Jake & freshman Andrew Witkowski finish their 10 mile XC relay in 53:34, good for 4th place overall and first for Goshen College. Brock and his teammate finished 7th in 55:29.

*Anthony Pettiford* and Wilmington College opened up their 2010 season at at the Sodexo Grizzly Invitational, hosted by Franklin College (Indiana). Pettiford, a sophomore, surprised his coaching staff with a 2 minute PR over the 8 kilometer (5 mile) distance finishingn34^th out of 68 runners in 30:16. His efforts helped Wilmington College to a third-place finish out of the seven colleges competing.

*Reini Brickson* and her Lindsey Wilson University (KY) teammates will open up their season next Saturday at the Queen City Invitational hosted by teh University of Cincinnati. Brickson is a 2010 graduate of Yellow Springs HS where she was a 2 year Captain of the Bulldog XC team.
